If Jesus Saves, Well, He Better Save Himself

“Our Father, high in heaven, smile down on your son, who is busy with his money games, his women, and his gun, oh Jesus save me. And the unsung western hero, he killed an Indian or three and then made his name in Hollywood to set the White man free, oh Jesus save me. If Jesus saves, well he better save himself, from the gory glory seekers who use his name in death, oh Jesus save me.” – “Hymn 43” by Jethro Tull.

“When Jesus Christ came upon the earth, you killed him, the son of God. You nailed him up!!! You thought he was dead, but you were mistaken. And only after you thought you killed him did you worship him and start killing those who would not worship him.” – Tecumseh, Native American Chief & warrior.

If you all remember my last Chuck’s Chat, I talked about my dear friend Robert Moore who is the host of the radio show “Sonic Spectrum” here in the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan area on 90.9FM The Bridge. His show is on Saturday evenings from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm CST. You may also recall the fact that you do not have to live in Kansas City if you wish to listen to his radio show. You can hear Robert live by googling 90.9FM The Bridge and pushing “Listen Live.”

One of the singers Robert schooled me on his show was Poly Styrene, the front woman of the British punk band X-Ray Spex. Unfortunately, Ms. Styrene passed away in 2011 from breast cancer. I would like to think that if she were alive today, she would expand her hit protest song, “Oh Bondage, Up Yours” from being about women’s equal rights to all marginalized groups’ equal rights, which are under attack in this period.

From time to time, people speak very fondly about the late John Lennon and his music. I was very fond of his music and activism as well. Besides Donna Summer, John Lennon was the only celebrity whose death hit me so hard in the gut that I broke down in tears. John was a quiet man who imagined/dreamt of a better world, but don’t get it twisted. Mr. Lennon was not afraid to speak out and protest about social injustices, unlike some of the same people who praise him. They need to keep his name out of their mouths.

You don’t get a Girl Scout cookie claiming you are a Christian or a Believer in peace and unity, and that is the reason you remain complacent in times of great injustices. All I hear is that you are a coward & freeloader who is not willing to put skin in the game. You’d rather have other people fight injustices for you, while you sit back and reap the rewards of their hard work and sacrifices. Quit playing the victim if you claim you are a Christian and people poke fun at you. Some of you remain complacent & above it all, allowing MAGA White Supremacists to hijack your religion as means to push their racism and bigotry into public laws and policies. I have a buddy who is a Christian, who is the real thing. He isn’t fearful of protesting social injustices. In one of his latest posts, he said, “Because of the way the word has been corrupted, I’m no longer referring to myself as a Christian. I’m a person who is trying my best to follow the teachings of Jesus.”

While I strive to be more like John Lennon, imagining and dreaming of a better, more just world, I am realistic about the fact that, at times, to achieve that goal, one has to be in your face like Nina Simone or Poly Styrene.
