Netflix’s “Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui”: Try It You Might Like It

Spoiler Alert in this article.

Back in the late 1990s to mid-2000s, I had an overnight music radio show called “ChuxMix”. It was from midnight to 5:00 am early Friday mornings. It was on 90.1FM, KKFI Kansas City’s 100,000-watt listener-supported community radio station.

I mixed party/dance music from the 1960s to the mid-1990s. I mixed eclectic genres, of music from psychedelic rock, disco, R&B, and new wave. I would also play dance music from around the world.

A Kansas City listener from India called me to ask me if I ever heard of Bhangra. I told him no. He told me that it was a type of music that fused the 1970s/80s pop music with music from the Punjab region of India. Later, he mailed me the Bhangra song “Yaar Nach La” by Johnny Zee. It was wild. I loved it. I have been a fan of Bhangra music and later Bollywood dance films since. My love for Bhangra music/dancing intensified when British dance duo “Signature” debut their 1st audition on “Britain’s Got Talent” in April 2008.

The latest Bollywood movie I like is on Netflix. It was released in India in December 2021. For some reason, it bombed at the box office there One Indian professional movie critic wrote “Despite all the wokeness it seems to make, it does not budge an inch from its received wisdom about what constitutes masculinity.” A long time ago, I learned not to pay attention to movie critics. I’d rather see for myself and make my own judgment.

I liked “Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui.” I found this dramedy movie to be quite entertaining. It reminded me of a combination of 3 movies: “Westside Story,” “Boys Don’t Cry,” and “TransAmerica.” Of course, it didn’t have the murders associated with “Westside Story” and “Boys Don’t Cry.”

The premise of the movie is that Manu is the owner of a gym in Chandigarh, India. He is also a competitive bodybuilder preparing for an annual competition. Manu’s gym is failing to attract customers, so to attract a different type of clientele, a Zumba instructor named Maanvi offers to have classes there. Manu is physically attracted to Maanvi, but before they share their 1st kiss, Maanvi informs Manu that she has to tell him something. Manu thinking below his belt refuses to hear what she has to say, and the relationship graduates to another level. Manu and Maanvi fall in love and their relationship becomes sexual. Manu’s family adores Maanvi with his sisters encouraging him to ask her to get married. Manu takes their advice. when Nabu proposes to Maanvi, that is when she lets him know what her story is. That is when all the mayhem explodes. Despite the poor box office sales, the two main characters were praised for their performances.

Manu is portrayed by Indian actor Ayushman Khurrana. He has worked in several Hindi films often portraying ordinary men battling social norms. He is also a singer and a television host. Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2020.

Maanvi is portrayed by Indian actress Vaani Kapoor. Ms. Kapoor is best known for starring in several Hindi films. She made her debut in 2013 in the romantic comedy “Shuddh Desi Romance.” The film was a movie critic and commercial success. She won a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Ms. Kapoor faced criticism for her performances in two movies. One in 2014 and another in 2016. She took a 3-year hiatus from acting before returning in 2019. She has been praised for her performance as a Transgender woman in the movie “Chandigarh Kare Aashiquit”

I hope you all who read this article will give “Shandigarn Kare Aashiqui” on Netflix a chance. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Let me know what you think.
