Brand New Chapter Forms In Equality Kansas

For those of you who may not have heard of or not familiar with the “Equality Kansas”, it I a statewide grass-root organization of dues-paying members. Currently, there are 11 chapters across the state with over 2000 members.

The mission of “Equality Kansas” is to end discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

To accomplish this task, it is done through education, public policy, advocacy, and political action.

Generally, the Kansas State Legislation meets around the months of January through May. “Equality Kansas” maintains a full time lobbying presence to advocate legislation to end discrimination, prevent school bullying, and preserving LGBTQ voting rights.

“Equality Kansas” fights against bills that outlaw LGBTQ parenting options legalize discrimination against LGBTQ Kansans in the name of “religious freedom” and any other attempts to restrict/deny the rights of the Kansas LGBTQ populace.

State chapters advocate for local non-discrimination policies/ordinances, assist youth in establishing high school genders & sexuality alliance (GSA) clubs, work with local school districts regarding bullying prevention and sex education policies.

“Equality Kansas” rural chapters provide support and a “social center” for isolated LGBTQ Kansans who live and work in remote parts of our state.

Along in that same line of thinking that there are different needs between urban and rural populaces, a new chapter of “Equality Kanas” was initiated in May 2020. This new chapter is titled “Equality Kansas Northeast.”

Formerly a part of “Equality Kansas Metro KC” Tom Alonzo, the current Chair of the brand new chapter did a telephone interview with me a couple of weeks ago to school us what this new chapter is all about plus generate interests amongst Kansas LGBTQs who live in certain counties of Kansas that live in certain counties of Kansas that the new chapter covers. I will announce those counties later on in this article.

One of the first things that Tom wanted to address was dispelling any rumors that there were any rumors that there was any drama within “Equality Kansas Metro KC” which cause the reason for a new chapter to form from their parent group.

Tom explained. “To put it in simplistic terms, Johnson Country has a huge populace around 500,000 people: mostly White, mostly suburban. “Equality Kansas Northeast” encompasses the counties of Wyandotte, Leavenworth, Atchison, Doniphan, and Brown. We are multi-racial, urban, rural, military, and immigrants in our makeup. Naturally, our issues and concerns were being unintentionally swallowed up.”

our telephone interview continued, Tom schooled me that forming the new chapter, the goal is to increase more Non-Whites in leadership positions and membership dispelling the rumor that “Equality Kansas” was for only White LGBTQs. With the new chapter forming, issues that affect Non-White LGBTQs are put front and center and can be dealt with properly.
