GOPs: Gaslighting Gangsters

“Oh no, you don’t mean nothing at all to me. But you got what it takes to set me free.”

Nelly Furtado, “Say It Right”

For many decades and through different eras, it has been customary for different colloquialisms in modern popular culture to emerge. Usually, it originates from, people of color, LGBTQs, and young people in general.

Lately, there has been lingo that has been tossed around, or at least I have not heard of this idiom until recently. That slang word is “gaslighting.”

When I first heard someone say it, I figured out its meaning by the context in which they were using it. I figured it was some sort of con game, a swindle.

I didn’t give the term much thought.

As time went on, I heard the term used more frequently. My curiosity got the best of me. I decided to do a little research.

A simplistic definition of “gaslighting” is manipulation by psychological means into questioning one’s sanity.

In checking with the origin of the term, it came from the plot of the 1944 movie titled “Gaslight.” starring Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer, and Joseph Cotton. The storyline of the movie is about a man who strategically and psychologically manipulates his wife into believing that she is going insane.

According to Psychology Today magazine, it is a common technique of abusers, dictators, narcissists, and cult leaders. It is done slowly so the victim doesn’t realize they are being brainwashed.

Psychology Today magazine listed the 11 warning signs of gaslighting. They are:

  (1) They tell blatant lies.

  (2) They deny they ever said something, even though you have proof.

  (3) They use what is near and dear to you as ammunition.

  (4) They wear you down over time.

  (5) Their actions do not match their words.

  (6) They throw in positive reinforcements to confuse you.

  (7) They know confusion weakens people.

  (8) They project.

  (9) They try to align people against you.

  (10) They tell you or others that you are crazy.

  (11) They tell you everyone else is a liar.

Trumplicans, let’s not play with each other. Do not read this article and think you have a “gotcha ya” weapon to use that you are a victim. Being labeled as a victim is Psychology Today’s term. I consider you all evil ass suckers.

GOPS are gangsters when it comes to “gaslighting.” They know their base thrives on looking down on folks they define as inferior to them. You use your base’s disdain for people of color, LGBTQs, Muslims, Jews, and strong, outspoken, Progressive-minded women as their kryptonite in being reasonable.

Your base’s proclivity in thinking they belong to the same clique as you even though they are poor and middle financial class. They mistakenly think that their White complexion is their protection. Little do they realize you have major disdain for them and after you finish using their behinds, you will toss them aside like a snot-filled Kleenex.

My message to your base is from the words of a successful and wealthy Black woman, Janet Jackson. “It’s nice to laugh, but don’t be the joke.”
