Story by Chuck Tackett

For most of December 2018, I was ill with that creepy crud that has been going around. I heard that it has plagued a lot of folks who have caught it. If I wasn’t in bed doing my best Rip Van Winkle impression, I was tormented by excessive coughing and sneezing. As a matter of fact, I coughed so much I got severely dehydrated. I couldn’t keep anything down including water. It became so bad I had to spend my birthday (XMAS eve) and most of XMAS in the hospital. I haven’t felt halfway better until around today, January 1st, the day I am writing this article.

Much to my surprise, I just now became aware that Zach Stafford has become the new Editor-in-Chief of “The Advocate” LGBTQ magazine. For my Millennial and Generation Z readership, “The Advocate” is our nation’s oldest LGBTQ magazine that is still in circulation. Zach has been a long time journalist and activist.

Mr. Stafford commented. “I have long respected ‘The Advocate’s’ rich history and the role the magazine played in the LGBTQ community which started with the reporting of police brutality in the late 1960s, a topic I am intimately familiar with from my own work. I am incredibly excited to lead ‘The Advocate’ in the reporting and storytelling of LGBTQ life from around the world even if it means ruffling a few feathers along the way.”

“The Advocate” was inspired and established after The Black Cat Tavern Riots which were on January 1st, 1967 in California.

Even though the Stonewall Riots happened in June 1969 two years before The Black Cat Tavern Riots, the Stonewall Riots were designated as the beginning of the LGBTQ Liberation Movement. The only reasonable explanation I can come up with is that Gay Pride Festivals are usually outside. January 1st would not be ideal for those who live in cold climate and January 1st is New Year’s Day. Those celebrations would be in conflict with New Year’s Eve parties along with New Year’s Day, plenty of folks are resting and recuperating from New Year’s Eve.

Zach will have the distinction of becoming The first Black Editor in Chief in “The Advocate’s” 50+ year history. Mr. Stafford will officially begin his duties in the latter part of January. Way to go Mr. Zach !!!!
