” My mom used to say life is like golgappas. Your tummy may be full, but your heart always wants more.” – Laal Singh Chaddha
On October 6, 2022, Netflix released the movie “Laal Singh Chaddha.” I had no idea at first what it was about, but it starred my favorite Bollywood actor, Aamir Khan, so it grabbed my attention.
During the first scene of the movie, I realized it was India’s adaptation of the movie “Forrest Gump.” The Forrest Gump character is named Laal Singh Chaddha. In that early scene of the movie, Laal was talking to a fellow train passenger. He had taken out a snack, and after asking her if she wanted some, that is when he said the above quote. While plenty of us who have seen the Forrest Gump movie is quite familiar with his saying about life being like a box of chocolates, I was curious about what golgappas were. Luckily when I saw the movie, I had an appointment with my podiatrist a couple of days later. He is from India, so I decided to ask him. He schooled me about them being one of India’s favorite street food. He further informed me they were puff pastries that are filled with a potato/chickpea mixture. They are then topped off with spice water or chutney. One of these days the next time I go back to an Indian restaurant, I am going to give them a try.
Those of you who know me or are regular readers of my articles are aware I am a fan of Bollywood films. Bhangra music and dancing are incredible in my opinion. I also enjoy watching other foreign movies whose genres fall into the categories I enjoy watching on streaming services I subscribe to. I feel I get a more realistic view of the country, especially countries plenty of Americans tend to look down on as not being as civilized. At times I have found out that those countries are way more advanced in handling pollution, climate change, and other matters.
When I told my podiatrist about my fondness for Aamir Khan, he replied that Khan is one of the most popular actors in India. He is a very outspoken Progressive. He said right-wing forces in India had started a well-organized smear campaign against him and persuaded folks to boycott his latest movie which is “Laal Singh Chaddha.” The movie flopped in India.
In doing some more research, I found out Aamir Khan had been a longtime outspoken advocate of India’s LGBTQ populace even before it was decriminalized in 2018.
If you have Netflix, I hope you watch “Laal Singh Chaddha”, and give his other movies a try. I hope you like them as much as I do.
