Why Can’t We Be Friends? Trick, I’ll Tell You Why

“We still can disagree and still love each other unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression and denial of my humanity and right to exist.”

James Baldwin – LGBTQ Icon, 1960s era Civil Rights Activist

When I hear a Trump-supporting Conservative ask, “Why can’t we be friends?” or, “Can’t we all just get along?” or some other homogenous question, I think to myself, this person knows damn well why. If I decide to waste my time verbally answering those types of questions, I just paraphrase my favorite quote from James Baldwin at the beginning of this article.

Colin Kaepernick tried to bring awareness of one of the factors that cause disunity in this country. Conservative White America wouldn’t listen. They lied, they gaslighted and generally played nut city. They embraced the oppression of Black people, other people of color, and marginalized groups. They have shown their support for our oppression, and lack of support for our humanity, and our right to exist. A few years back, the FBI warned that the KKK has infiltrated police departments all over this country. Most people shrugged it off. Why can’t we be friends? Why can’t we get along? Trick, I’ll tell you why.

We can’t be friends. We can’t, and have no desire to get along with racists and bigots. For the longest, White conservatives have worked overtime to show their repulsion of people of color and marginalized groups in this country. They have elected politicians and passed laws to maintain their disdain for us, to continue to push their false narrative of superiority.

Writing this article, my thoughts turned to the Labor and Civil Rights icon Dolores Huerta. Along with one of my personal heroes, Cesar Chaves, she co-founded the United Farmworkers Union. With this pandemic going on, Conservative White America has no problem sacrificing Latinx peoples’ lives doing back-breaking work in fields picking our fruits and vegetables and in our meatpacking houses. My question is, will they truly be valued for their essential service with hazard pay and medical benefits, or will they just be praised with empty ass lip service? Andrew Yang was so right when he said they need a raise, not your praise. I am sure Dolores Huerta is working overtime to help that become a reality. Conservative White America sees them as disposable, like the folks in cages at our border, and those in the prison system during this pandemic. Now ask your silly ass questions of, “Why can’t we be friends?” or, “Can’t we all just get along?”

The USA should be united. We are at war with COVID-19. The mango-colored “It” residing in the White House endangered Asian Americans with his irresponsible, childish, racial connotations of the virus. I wondered to myself if the late Civil Rights Activist Yuri Kochiyama were alive today, what would she say? Would she all be palsy-walsy with Conservatives ignoring their racism and bigotry?

For decades, conservative Whites have made it crystal clear they have no desire for unity. They’d rather shut themselves off from the rest of the world. Facts and science mean nothing if it doesn’t fit their narrow ass perspective.

Conservative White America, I do want to thank you for showing your ass. It has been said, sunshine is the best disinfectant. The rest of us in this country has seen that it’s time to clean house.
